Yoga has gained popularity in the mainstream exercise culture because it can be done by almost anyone. Power yoga is an intense, muscle-building workout where poses are held longer than in other types of yoga and breathing is altered more drastically. Power yoga is an updated version of classic yoga focused on increasing strength and flexibility. Like other styles of yoga power yoga is also a mental exercise. It is centered on self-discipline and helps participants seek inner-peace.

Another modern variation of yoga is Bikram yoga, also known as “hot” yoga. This is a style of yoga developed by Bikram Choundry, founder of the Yoga College of India. They call it “hot” because it is practiced in a yoga studio heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40% humidity. This is one environment in which yoga apparel matters. Sessions are guided by a specific dialogue and include 26 poses and two styles of breathing. Classes are designed for beginners and experts alike.

Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram Choundry was one of the first people in the world to illustrate the healing ability of yoga. When he was lifting weights at age 17 he injured his knee so severely that his doctor did not think he would walk again. Choundry was absolutely unwilling to accept this diagnosis and immediately began a physical therapy routine based on yoga. A little more than six months later he had made a full recovery.

In the 21st Century, more and more physical therapists recommend yoga as exercise for those recovering from almost any type of injury. It is especially helpful to those with back injuries. Yoga balls and yoga blocks are often included in rehabilitative routines because they are a great way to increase range of motion and flexibility. Stretching straps, balls, blocks and mats are the most commonly found items in yoga bags. Yoga kits may also include music, visual art and gemstones or crystals for the new-age yoga enthusiast.
